On July 24 2021 on the same day that the government announced the highest case numbers yet of the current COVID-19 Delta variant outbreak in Sydney thousands of anti-lockdown, anti-vax protesters and conspiracy theorists descended on the Sydney Central Business District. The protesters shut down the traffic in the city for hours as they marched and clashed with police in the most violent protest that Sydney has seen in almost a decade.
In 2014 the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy had been setup in “The Block” located near the Redfern Train Station to protest a developer building apartment buildings there without providing affordable housing for indigenous Australians. After I heard the NSW Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the developer in 2015 I went out to the site and spent time there during the last week that the occupiers led by indigenous activist Jenny Munro were allowed on the land.

Photojournalism
When COVID-19 impacted the world, this once in a century event inspired me to work on a photographic project again, the first time in several years. While many photojournalists around the world captured the early days of the pandemic unfolding, I wanted to capture the feeling of the pandemic in a more timeless way, exploring the feelings we all experienced, the depression, the isolation, the relationship between life and death. It has been a unique moment in time that hopefully won’t be experienced again for at least another century.
